FOR THE SPECTATOR,
TO GRATITUDE.
Divine sensation! thou art mine,
No hand can tear thee from thy seat;
My breast thy pleasures shall enshrine,
Until this heart shall cease to beat.
Thou futile action cease to boast
Thou canst a grateful soul suffice;
Thy worth is here forever lost
And here thy merit ever dies.
Thou clam'rous tongue, thy noise control
Nor let a murmuring sound intrude;
'Twould but disgrace a feeling soul
That loves to foster Gratitude.
Ye balmy tears which softly steal
From Gratitude's o'erflowing eye,
Ye only mark the sense I feel,
O may thy pleasures never die!
