Another motive was to break the previous world's record and to bring it to this country.
The weight of the train was 565,000 pounds, and it included Vice President Webb's private observation car, which contained appliances by which the occupants were able to see clearly the track and the mile posts, and so to take the time. The train besides being extraordinarily heavy, encountered very strong head winds while running through the Mohawk valley.
All things considered, the time made was marvelous. As to the liability of accident Private Secretary Leman said:
"Not one of the party felt the slightest uneasiness on this score. The mechanism of the road is so perfect that there is no chance of accident. The speed was uniformly even, and there was no more jarring or swaying of the cars than is noticeable on a regular passenger train. The only danger is that of striking a wagon at a crossing, and the risk here would be no greater practically, than on an ordinary passenger train."
