FEDERALISM AT WAR WITH A REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT.
Precious Confessions.
For your serious consideration we copy the following from the "United States Chronicle" of Thursday last. We consider it a rare-spoken truth, which good "Candidus" has spoken prematurely for his party: but comments are needless, the "Candid" confession follows in its simple dress.
"For the United States Chronicle.
"MR. Wheeler,
"Please to publish the following in your next Paper.
"LAST night a Caucus
men from different towns of this State, to nominate, or rather appoint, Representatives for this State to Congress. Those men had the modesty to assume to themselves the power of nominating Representatives for the whole State, and I have no doubt but they will, with equal confidence, direct the Freemen to appoint the men of their choice, should they be ever so useless or unfit to represent the State.
"It has long been the political care of
this State, that a Dictator and his Demagogues have assumed a power which belongs only to the freemen at large, viz. the right of nominating of general officers*; but their intriguing night-caucuses and conventions, have robbed the freemen of it, and they have eventually appointed not only members of Congress, but all the State officers. The freemen of the state have only to look back on the conduct of those men, and they will see their dearest interests sported with, to serve the purposes of demagogues, office hunters, and time servers.
"The only remedy that appears to be equal to the rotten situation of the state government, is, to form a Constitution which will guard the rights of the freemen against the intrigues of designing demagogues, and will say to them, thus far may you go, but no further. We then should have a state government that would appoint to office men of ability, and integrity, and the state would assume respectability, and justice would then be rendered to every person.
"I confess that in viewing the situation of my native state I cannot find words strong enough to express the SCORN and CONTEMPT that I feel. If Democrats, MEN of no principles, and hunters for office, are to assume the direction of the State, give us Monarchy, give us Aristocracy, give us Any THING but a Republican Government. But the day of retribution is at hand: Jefferson has had his day; his own partisans are falling off; and Federalism, that has slumbered so long, will wake like a giant refreshed with sleep. Those who repose on knaves for support, will find they will be the first to detect and expose. Villainy is always defeated by its own instruments.
CANDIDUS."
"August 25."
What mighty matters did the good federal "Dictators," and their "Demagogues." transact when they held their Caucus on Sunday! + Would the "candid" Federalists palm a Constitution upon this state, which should deprive the people of their privileges of assembling peaceably, and communicating with each other? This would be Federal tyranny in the extreme.
I Good "Candidus." you need not have told us this, for the conduct of your federal friends have evinced it to be true.
& Would Mr. Wheeler and his Federal friends, invite the Dey of Algiers, or the Spanish Monarch into this country, or would they make a dictator of Hamilton, raise him an army, and give him plenary power to crush all Republicans in the dust
