REED'S RE-ELECTION.
The Speaker Trying to Provide Work for His Floaters.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1.—Speaker Reed and his committee on rules were asked to-day by a resolution from Mr. Cummings of New York to authorize an investigation as to the necessity for the repairs which Speaker Reed has had the navy department order to be made at once at the Kittery navy yard, so as to give work to the floaters in Speaker Reed's district before the coming election. Speaker Reed will be as reluctant to report this favorably as he was to report the resolution providing for the Raum investigation, but whether the investigation is held or not the facts will justify the contest which has been threatened against Speaker Reed's seat in the next House, a contest which a democratic elections committee, if it followed the traditions of the present House, would decide against Speaker Reed.
