The Confederates took Palacios.
The Mexicans claim, however, that after having been driven from every fortified position, they were still holding out.
Gen. Magruder arrived at Brownsville on the 17th of April.
Matamoros is full of cheap goods, Irish Potatoes $2 50 per barrel, flour $11 00 per barrel. Dry goods in proportion.
He also says, the officers seized Mrs. Daniels' carriage and horses, and visited the neighboring places, informing those on the places that if they deserted their homes, the buildings would be burned.
Mr. Stead could give no account of the progress of the battle; but the impression was that they sought the reduction of Grand Gulf.
