Education By Bayonet Fails;
Battleground Shifts To Political Control At Ballot Box
The race mixers have changed their strategy.
For the next year, there will be less law suits, fewer bayonets and a slackened effort to ram race mixing down the throats of the white people.
The battleground shifts from the courthouse and the schoolhouse to the voting precincts.
The administration in Washington is completely controlled and dominated by the policies of the NAACP.
Political Complexion
They have set out to change the political complexion of the South through the Negro vote.
They have found that they cannot integrate the officials in the state capital and the local boards of education favor race mixing.
Therefore, they have set out now to try to defeat Southern Congressmen and Senators and to elect governors on their side of the fence.
NAACP Runs Washington
In order to launch this campaign, Roy Wilkins, Executive Secretary of the NAACP, and Clarence Mitchell, the head of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP, held a two-day conference in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday, November 16 and 17, 1957.
They have adopted as their immediate goal the registration of three million more Negro voters in the South.
They are hoping to build up enough Negro votes to elect governors and congressmen to suit them.
Put In Own Officials
Likewise, they are determined to elect local boards of education, mayors, city councilmen and local county officials who will take orders from the NAACP.
They have reached the conclusion that they cannot win their race mixing fight until they have won the political fight.
They hope to take the Negroes in every state and every community in the South and add them to the so-called liberals, Socialists, Communists, pinks and the punks, and control the politics.
Vote In Blocs
They know that they can vote the Negroes in blocs, like so many cattle, and that the white people will split.
Therefore, the NAACP has set out to control every state capitol, every courthouse and every city hall in the South through illiterate Negro bloc voting.
To further this end, the civil rights bill was passed through the last session of Congress.
They have set up a civil rights commission which will be dominated and run by the NAACP. Its purpose shall be to investigate all efforts to keep these illiterate, unqualified bloc voters off the list.
NAACP Lawyers
Then, the civil rights bill sets up in the office of the Attorney General in Washington a civil rights enforcement section to be headed by lawyers appointed upon the recommendation of the NAACP.
So, from now on, they will have a civil rights commission doing the dirty work for the NAACP at government expense. They will have the civil rights section of the Attorney General's office fulfilling the purposes of the NAACP and under NAACP direction.
The lawyers will be NAACP lawyers.
Full Scale Campaign
So, they are now launching a full-scale campaign to control Southern politics.
In the beginning, they had the idea that bayonets and military force was the way to bring the South to her knees.
They have found out at Little Rock that the South cannot be scared or intimidated and that it would take more troops than the United States had to force the Negroes into the white schools throughout the South.
So, Little Rock has caused the shift in strategy.
Now the great battle for the control of Southern politics is on.
Rag-tag Voters
The sole issue will be whether the NAACP will be able to get enough illiterate, unqualified bloc Negro voters on the election rolls to guarantee to the NAACP, the Communists, Socialists, race mixers, pinks and the punks, control of Southern politics.
They are after control of the state capitols. They are after control of the courthouses; they are after control of the city halls.
