Letters received by the Society for propagating Christian Knowledge from Madras in the East Indies, dated May 25, 1763, contain an account, that they had stretched a great way into the country among the Heathens, making many proselytes, and among the rest a number of weavers who had set up six looms at Vepery, which promised much success. Those missionaries also acknowledge the receipt of 120l. from Mr. Ziegenhagen, of London, and the Rev. Dr. Francke, in Germany: the latter of which gentlemen had also sent them a number of Tamulian types, with a promise of more, which they were to use; the government having erected a printing-office in the city of Madras, and had given the care and inspection of the same to them.
These letters say, that in July, 1762, Mr. Schwartz, a Danish missionary of Tranquebar, not only preached in the city of Tanjore, but also in the King's palace. The King was present, and heard him, but was not to be seen by him. In September he returned to Trichinopoly, after receiving a great many Heathens and Papists into his congregation.
