THE STATE CONVENTION
From the announcement appearing in our columns this morning, it will be seen that TUESDAY THE NINTH OF JUNE, has been fixed by the Central Executive Committee for the meeting of a Democratic State Convention in this city. To this body the various counties of the State are requested to appoint delegates through primary meetings, to be held on or before Monday, the first of June. We regard the time and the place as judicious, and have no question there will be a general response, and that the PEOPLE of Tennessee opposed to Radicalism will be fully represented, and that proper measures will be concerted to enable them to do all that in them lies, to aid in the redemption of the country.
There has been an exhibition of impatience by a portion of our friends, at the delay of action in this matter on the part of the Committee, but we have been able to appreciate the reasons for complaint. The time is yet ample in which to form the convention, and the changes in the current of events have been so frequent, and by the distempered condition of affairs, everything is rendered so uncertain and fluctuating, that it was wise to postpone until the latest day possible. At no time has there been any disposition prevailing among those whose duty it was to provide for the assembling of such a body, to act timidly, or to advise a supine course. They have waited to canvass the sentiment of the people, and have advised with the various sections of the State, and finding a concurrent opinion in favor of a formal organization, have issued the announcement accordingly.
The call is properly directed to all white men. It is intended to embrace Whigs and Democrats alike, Union men and Confederates. The convention is expected to be composed entirely of white men, who will represent the political Tennessee who reprobate Radicalism, and who desire to banish that accursed thing from power, and reinstate the rule of the Constitution. It has adopted the name of the Democracy, because under that title, the great mass of the people with whom they sympathize in sentiment and agree in opinion are already organized.
