Response to the letters recently mailed out to all Columbus County businessmen requesting their contributions to the N. C. 4-H Development Fund campaign has been gratifying but there's still a long way to go to reach the $7800 county quota, W. Horace Carter, campaign chairman, announced today.
"We have received a total of 70 contributions totalling $1065 from the letters and most of those businessmen contributed their suggested share of the county quota. But we believe that there are more than 70 businessmen in Columbus County who are interested in setting up this fund so that many rural boys and girls will have the opportunity to attend college who otherwise will not have finances available to continue their education," Carter said.
The 4-H Development Fund is seeking to raise $1,000,000 in the State with which to promote the rural youth program in North Carolina. This money will provide scholarships for needy and deserving 4-H club boys and girls, enhance the camping facilities and provide for larger participation in the exchange student program with other countries. All of the three phase objectives are designed to better the future of North Carolina farm youths.
In an effort to remind businessmen of the need for their financial assistance in this program, those who have not contributed to date will receive a reminder card within the next few days. The county committee is hopeful that this will spur those who are financially able to mail their contributions in.
After the reminder cards have been mailed out and businessmen have had the opportunity to mail their contributions, a ten day personal solicitation will be held throughout the county in both the rural and town areas.
The personal solicitation is scheduled for February 10 until the 20th. Everyone who has received a solicitation letter and not responded will be called upon in person. The county committee has selected a number of community leaders in every part of the county to make the solicitation.
During this ten day period, the various community development associations in Columbus county will seek to raise the quotas set for each of them in addition to soliciting the in town potential participants in the drive.
"We do not want Columbus county to fall behind the other counties of North Carolina. Many counties have already raised their full quotas and we want to have ours completed by February 20. This cause is as worthy as any of the others that are held every year. But this is a one time drive. When we have raised this $7800, we do not have to worry about it coming up again. It's a one shot deal and the committee and workers hope to wrap it up successfully by the February 20 deadline that we have set," Carter said.
