OUR WEEKLY PAPER.—It has long been the desire of the publishers of THE NEWS AND HERALD to present their weekly paper in an enlarged form, and their purpose is carried out this week. The increase in the quantity of reading matter is about eighty per cent., and we trust our readers will perceive a general improvement. This enlargement has involved no small outlay, in the purchase of a new press and other necessary material, but has been made with the view to give subscribers as much reading matter as possible for their money. The indications are that it is not a propitious time for any increase of expenditure, but we trust that our efforts to give the people of Fairfield a paper worthy of their support will meet with such general and substantial encouragement as will prove our venture to be a wise one. Its success will depend upon the response it evokes from the patrons of the paper. If every delinquent subscriber will pay up—if, indeed, every one, whatever he may owe, will promptly pay a year's subscription, we should be at once encouraged and aided in our efforts to publish a first class weekly. In the five years during which THE NEWS AND HERALD has been under its present management, there has been much to discourage, and, as we have said before, any improvements we may have made have resulted rather from our desire to issue a first-rate paper than from any increase of profits justifying increased expenditures. We acknowledge our indebtedness to our patrons—both subscribers and advertisers—for that kindly support without which we should have accomplished nothing. We trust we shall always show our appreciation of the favors we have enjoyed, by using our constant efforts not only to supply a readable paper, but at the same time to advance the true interests of the good people of Fairfield.
