Full Text
Luther's manner of studying the Scriptures.
Extract from his writings.--
"It is very certain that the scriptures cannot be understood by study or by skill. The first duty, therefore, is to begin with prayer. Ask the Lord that he would deign to grant you, of his great mercy, the true knowledge of his word! There is no other interpreter of the word of God, than its own author, as He hath said: 'They shall all be taught of God.' Hope nothing from your labors, nothing from your skill; trust only in God and in the influence of his Spirit. Believe one who has tried."
