December 11.
Extract of a letter from Trenton, December 3, 1776.
On the 8th instant the enemy appeared on the opposite side of Brunswick river, and began to play on the town with their artillery, but did little damage; we returned the fire from our artillery with great briskness, which obliged the enemy to retreat two miles back. Our army are in high spirits, expecting to be reinforced to-morrow from Pennsylvania, with a body of 3000 militia, a German battalion, and a number of field pieces. Howe's army is in a bad situation, and if they advance, which we are wishing for, we shall have a fair opportunity to give them a severe blow, particularly if General Gates joins General Lee, and comes on their backs, we have the greatest reason to hope for success. This day an express has been despatched to General Lee to hasten his march. Expect in my next to give you some interesting and very agreeable intelligence.
By an officer of the Maryland battalion, just arrived from the American camp, which he left last Friday, we are informed, that General Washington, from intelligence which he had received from General Lee (then encamped at New Ark with 13,000 men) had marched his army from Princeton and Trenton to Brunswick, and that the British army, who had continued on the opposite side of Brunswick, had suddenly retreated back towards Amboy, in order to embark for New York. General Washington, when he left the camp, had a strong army, and that it was thought the two Generals would attack the English army before they passed Amboy.
