MARBLEHEAD, Mass.--Marblehead is noted for more than being a seaport town filled with ancient houses and retired sea dogs. For the last year it has enjoyed the title of the Monte Carlo of Massachusetts. More lotteries are carried on openly in Marblehead in proportion to the population than in any community in eastern Massachusetts.
Rumor says that card games are played in little rooms in more than a score of houses every night. Moreover, it is said, the winning lottery numbers are posted on the official town bulletin board.
If the town fathers shut their eyes to this the town mothers, with the coming of the vote, decided that the lotteries and card games for money must end. They are out to clean up the town and war has started on gambling. The campaign is in charge of the local organization of the Massachusetts League of Women Voters.
Thursday the opening shot will be fired when Miss Emma Schumacher will introduce a resolution at a meeting of the women voters demanding an end of all public gambling in Marblehead.
