The report of the Secretary of War discloses some interesting facts and statistics respecting the military events of the last year of the war. The figures show the power of the Federal Government and the wonderful extent of the means and material brought to bear against the Southern armies. In the spring of 1865 the Federal forces amounted to 970,710 men. Of this number 662,315 were present with their colors and fit for duty. Sherman advanced against Johnston with 65,000 and Grant crossed the Rapidan with 122,000. The other Federal forces in Virginia and North Carolina amounted to 100,000 exclusive of 50,000 in West Virginia. Thus 180,000 men were operating against Richmond. Notwithstanding the heavy losses of the campaigns of 1865 we find that on the 1st of March, 1865 the Federal armies numbered 850,100 men, of whom 602,895 were fit for duty. A calculation of the strength of the Confederate armies at the time of the capitulation exhibits the total number of 171,223. The total number of negroes enrolled in the Federal army is 178,975. Deducting those mustered out there is now in the service of the Federal government an army of 85,023 blacks.
