Paper clippings have reached residents of these parts telling of the 17th anniversary of the Good Housekeeping Shop in Charlotte, N. C. Normally the event would not cause much of a stir, but this is different, because the store is owned and operated by the husband of a Cumberland native and the general manager, her brother, is also from Cumberland.

Mrs. Charles T. Smith, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stonnel, is vice-president of the successful enterprise of which her husband is president. Mr. Smith is a native of Dayton, Ohio. General Manager is Roy Stonnel, Mrs. Smith's brother.

Mrs. Smith, a graduate of William and Mary College with a B.A. degree in science and home economics, was employed by the Kelvinator division of Nash-Kelvinator Corporation as a home economist before her marriage.

The Smith's sons, Frederick, 14, and Louis, 12, are average American boys with great interest in sport and both are handy at whipping up a cake when occasion demands.

Mr. Stonnel's association with the Good Housekeeping Shop dates back to the first day of its operation in 1937. He started as a delivery man and was soon promoted to the service department. He rose to be head of the service department and two years ago was made general manager. Since 1937 he has stayed with the company continuously, except for three years he spent in the U. S. Army during World War II. He is married to the former Miss Page Hunter, a Mecklenburg county native and they have two children.

During the 17th anniversary celebration of the Good Housekeeping Shop, the public was invited to inspect all the appliances and many valuable gifts were given away. The entire store was redecorated for the event and a suite of five new offices built.
