$44,000 Cash Stolen From Post Office Of Small Mining Town

BRITTANIA BEACH, B.C. (P)--Theft of a payroll package containing $44,000 in cash was discovered Friday when the post office opened at this little copper mining town of 1,500 on the British Columbia coast.

It was one of Canada's largest post office robberies in recent years.

Mounted police, who did not report the theft until Saturday, said the money was received at the post office in a registered package from the royal bank of Canada Thursday, and was taken either Thursday night or early Friday morning.

The package apparently had not been put in the safe where it usually is kept.

The safe was locked and undamaged when the money was found to be missing yesterday.
