FREDERICK, MD., June 14—Evening—A
resident of this city, who has just returned
from Harper's Ferry, states that the bridge
has been entirely destroyed, with the exception
of the piers, which are yet standing. The
trestle work of the railroad bridge within the
town was also destroyed.
The Government buildings were being se-
verally burned when he left there at 11 o'clock
this morning. The armory was first fired
and destroyed, and the rifle works, he suppo-
sed, would follow next. All the machinery
had been transported into the interior several
days ago. My informant estimates that about
four thousand troops were in town. The
main body, it is said has been pushed for-
ward to Charlestown, and to a point near Leas-
burg.
SHARPSBURG, Md., June 14.—It is reliably
stated that the Rebels, on retreating from
Harper's Ferry, divided into two wings, one
retreating in the direction of Winchester and
the other into Loudon county, indicating
that Manassas Junction was the point aimed
at.
In addition to the burning of the bridge
the remaining Government buildings were all
burned, and the smoke of the conflagration
can be plainly seen from this point.
The bridge at Martinsburg was also burned
to day.
WILLIAMSPORT, Md., June 14—The Shep-
herdstown bridge was burned last night, and
the smoke and flame could be seen here plainly.
The Rebel pickets have all been withdrawn
for ten miles above and twenty miles below.
A rumor reached here this evening that the
Rebels were throwing up earth works at Shep-
herd's Ford, between Dam No 4 and between
Shepherdstown bridge. A gentleman arri-
ved here this morning, who visited Stewart's
Camp at Homerville, four miles this side of
Martinsburg last evening. He found that
the camp had been broken up, and the troops
moved to Martinsburg.
A correspondent at
Williamsport writes
that at 7 o'clock on Thursday evening a mes-
senger arrived at the Rebel post, opposite
that town at the top of his speed.
A corre-spondent at Sharpsburg writes that
two Virginians were shot at Dam No 5, and
that an attack was being made on a warehouse
at Mercersville which the people were prepa-
ring to resist. The attack was made for the
purpose of robbing it of its contents.
