On the eve of the state conference of Ohio National Association for the Advancement of Colored People branches in Dayton, dissension breaks out within the national office of the organization. The climax of the schism was the firing of Dr. W. E. B. DuBois by the national board for what it termed a refusal (by DuBois) to abide by the directives of the organization.
Dr. DuBois in a letter had criticized the board for permitting Walter White, executive secretary, to go to Paris as a consultant to the United States delegation to the general assembly of the United Nations. DuBois charged that participation by the NAACP "ties us in with the reactionary, war-mongering colonial imperialism of the present administration."
The news, according to board president, Arthur Spingarn, was in the hands of reporters before the board had time to consider it.
Dr. DuBois denied informing the press, but added that if the press had queried him he would have confirmed it.

a motion that "it will not be in the best interests of the associa- tion to continue the employment of Dr. DuBois as staff member beyond the term of his present contract," which expires Decem- ber 31. Dr. DuBois, one of the founders of the association, is currently director of special re- search of the NAACP.
That the trouble lies far deeper than the board cares to admit, is well- known to those in the know. DuBois and White have long disagreed on fundamental philosophy. DuBois has never had any "masters." Everything he has written has been written from pure conviction. He has always readily admitted his mistakes, as his biography, Dusk of Dawn, re- veals. That is why he was at- tacked by white philanthropy in his dispute with Booker T. Wash- ington.
The three oldest Negroes in Who's Who in America, this wri- ter's father, DuBois, and White all live in adjoining apartments in New York's 409 Edgecombe ave- nue. That bad blood exists be- tween them has been obvious from just living next door. White and DuBois have political differences which are irreconcilable. It is this difference which has brought on this complete split. The NAACP executives have sided with White, while a good portion of the mem- bership stands behind DuBois.
What effect, if any, the split will have on the conference here next week is difficult to say at this time.
