What is this article about?

A valuable copper mine has been discovered near Woodbridge in New-Jersey, with ore equal or superior to any known, and workers employed there. Reports of rich gold mines in these States are dismissed as unfounded, with praise for the continent's fertile soil as a source of wealth, quoting Horace.

Full Text

We hear a very valuable copper mine has been
broke up near Woodbridge in New-Jersey; and
those who have examined the ore do not scruple to
assert it is equal if not superior in richness to any
that has yet been discovered on this continent, or
elsewhere. There are at present a considerable
number of persons working in it.

Notwithstanding all that has been said of the
discovery of one or two rich gold mines in these
States, it does not yet appear that the intelligence is
founded on fact. Nature has, in all probability
denied that valuable metal to this part of the con-
tinent, and in lieu thereof given us a soil, which,
with proper industry, will always command a suf-
fficiency of the treasures of Peru and Mexico. The
Romans of old became rich, without such assistance,
and considered it as their glory, as we learn from
Horace;

"Despising gold, he'll greater shine
Than forcing it from out the mine,
With sacrilegious hand to fill
The world with that destructive ill."

Nature has, in all probability denied that valuable metal to this part of the continent, and in lieu thereof given us a soil, which, with proper industry, will always command a sufficiency of the treasures of Peru and Mexico.
