Miss Marietta Smith.—Quite an excitement was caused, a few nights since, in consequence of the supposed discovery of this young lady. One answering her description, in every particular, called at a house of doubtful character in Mercer street, and sought board. The mistress of the house immediately informed several persons that a girl of the description of Miss S. had called at her house for board, and that she would be there the following evening. At the appointed time, several persons interested in her discovery repaired to the place designated; but, to their disappointment, she did not make her appearance. They then went to several other houses of like character—at every one of which they heard of the supposed Miss Smith, but she could not be found. At a late hour, they gave up the search for the night, with a determination to prosecute their efforts until she was found. The following night the search was recommenced and, at a late hour, the object was found at a house in Houston street. So perfectly did she answer the description that, but for an acquaintance of the lost Miss Smith, who was present, she would have been taken to the house of the disconsolate parents. The girl proved to be a case similar to the one they sought. She was very much frightened, supposing that she had been discovered by her parents, and that the officers of the law were about to restore her to them. She stated that she was from Connecticut, and had been seduced from the house of her parents but a short time. That since she came to the city, she discovered her paramour to be a married man; but as he had promised to support her, she would remain in the city.— Upon being asked if she would not like to return to the house of her parents, she replied that she would rather die. She refused to give her proper name, or the location of her late home. This is another of those cases in which a married man, a man who has a family of children, has been the means of seducing from home and happiness an innocent and thoughtless girl and carried sorrow to the fireside he so wantonly invaded. It is a pity that the names of such men are not found out, and they held up to public execration as preying wolves upon innocence and virtue. His name will be known, despite all his efforts at concealment, and publicly emblazoned, that one of the gang of apparently gentlemanly libertines, may receive the reward of his crime by deserved censure and reproach. As the girl in question did not prove to be Miss Smith, the general impression is that she has either left the city or is yet secreted in some vile hiding place unknown to the police.
