Motion For Appeal

Convicted to serve from four-to-
six years Tuesday in the Nov 15
slaying of Edwin C. Wilson, Ralph
R. Smith of 550 Martin Street, S.E.
was released under a $4,000 appeal
bond after his attorneys, Ellis Bar-
rett and his associates, filed a motion
for a new trial, court clerks disclosed.

Indicted on a charge of murder,
Smith claimed he shot Wilson in
self-defense while they were engaged
in a gun battle following Wilson's
fatal shooting of his estranged wife
Mrs. Dorothy Wilson. The state con-
tended that Smith shot his victim
after the latter had obeyed an order
to hide his pistol.

Smith was convicted on a charge
of voluntary manslaughter.
