Full Text

Negro Soldiers.—An officer in Banks' expedition writes that the rebel guns at Port Hudson are worked entirely by negroes, who make the best heavy artillerists in the world, being very muscular, and their brains not being affected by the concussion from the discharge. Our own Government is beginning to realize this fact, and Forts Jackson and St. Philip are now being manned by negroes. There are now about 3,000 of them thoroughly drilled in ground movements as infantry, without arms, by General Phelps.
