Full Text

To the calculating mind it should seem that blood enough had been shed, during the late war, to wash away every vestige of British depredation on our fisheries ; but on the contrary these appear to be more strongly impressed. True, we are prohibited by treaty from fishing on their banks ; but this prohibition, according to the laws of nations, can extend only three leagues from their shore. However, no matter when our fish are caught or cured, the moment the poor fisherman's sail in sun to whiten the ocean, these harpies pounce upon their prey with an avidity which would disgrace the pirates of Barbary ; as if these self styled " lords of the ocean" claimed the sole propriety in the finny race. It is to government that our hardy adventurers look for protection, and high time it is that a stop were put to such proceedings. If war should be declared, the United States would join heart and hand under our present administration, and we would humbly, but dispassionately, say, come war, come famine, come pestilence, but let our national honor be preserved.
