Martin Luther King Urges "Love For Foe"

INDIANAPOLIS (ANP) - The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., 29-year-old Montgomery, Ala., Baptist leader who led a boycott of segregated city buses in 1956, spoke to an estimated 3,500 persons at Cadle Tabernacle last week. His appearance was sponsored by the public forum committee of the Senate Avenue YMCA.

A new age of justice that is dawning for the Negro challenges him to love even his oppressors, Rev. King stated. If the Negro assumes new ness and recrimination then "the new age will be nothing but a duplicate of the old."

He referred to current racial tensions as "the usual pains that represent birth," indicative of the fact that a new world is being born.

"But the new world," he exhorted listeners, "challenges the Negro to 1) Rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns; (2) achieve excellence in all our fields of endeavors, and (3), enter the new age with understanding and good cheer in our hearts."

In his welcome remarks at the meeting, Mayor-elect Charles Boswell likened Rev. King with Crispus Attucks, Nathan Hale and Daniel Boone. Rev. King, during an airport interview prior to his address, said he is still under "orders to take it easy for quite some time" after being stabbed by a deranged Negro woman last September in New York.

He added that the executive branch of the federal government had failed to exercise sufficient "moral persuasion" in racial matters.
