Full Text
A few days since, a colored woman residing in the town of Coventry, gave to a poor miserable being—named Peleg Gorton, a small sum of money to purchase rum, for their mutual use. Obtaining the rum, they drank so long and deep, so that the woman becoming utterly insensible and helpless, fell from her chair into the fire, and was burnt to such a horrible degree, that she died on the following day. Gorton was seized with convulsions and fits, so that his life was despaired of.
Oh, the ravages of rum! Yet multitudes of men in our land, look quietly on, refusing to have any part or lot in these glorious movements, designed to stay these fearful, wide spreadings desolations. There are multitudes more, who glory in cursing their fellowmen—glory in tearing away the flood gates of iniquity, thus deluging their country and the world, with moral desolation and eternal death. The above incident and thousands of similar ones, excite not their feelings, or move in any manner their obdurate—hearts. Many of them persist in a course, whose end and object would shame extremest hell. Non committalest, moderate drinker, rum-seller. "Thou art the man."
