MEMPHIS, Tenn.—When they mention tennis in Dixie these days the talk invariably swings to Ramsay Potts, jr., 17-year-old prep school student.
He is the newest sensation on southern courts and there are many enthusiasts ready to wager their shirts that a few years of seasoning will place him among the nation's top-ranking players.
Especially since that other Dixie court idol, Bitsy Grant, apparently is not to get his Davis Cup chance despite his frequent conquests of high-ranking stars, is the south hopeful that Potts will "make the grade."
The youngster, a native of Memphis, is the southern prep champion and the fourth ranking junior in the United States. He will be entered this season in the Western junior tournament at Los Angeles.
His followers say he is developing all the time. During the winter he gained eight pounds. And with that to his advantage, they believe his playing this season will be even more sensational than in the past.
Ramsay will be graduated from the Darlington Preparatory school at Rome, Ga., this spring. He intends to enter some southern university that makes tennis an important part of its sports program.
His chief sponsor is his father, Ramsay Potts, sr., who is convinced his son is destined to go far.
