PORTLAND, Nov. 23--John H. Doughty, until recently in the employ of the paper mill at Oregon City, was placed under arrest in this city today on the charge of kidnaping Ambrose Small, at Toronto, a year ago. It is also alleged that Doughty stole bonds valued at approximately $100,000.
The sudden disappearance of Ambrose Small, local theatrical magnate, about a year ago, proves one of the most mystifying cases the police of this city ever encountered.
On the day he disappeared, Small deposited a million-dollar check with a local bank, the check representing the proceeds of the sale of theater interests. A few days later Doughty, who was Small's secretary, also disappeared. A reward of $50,000 was offered for any information that would lead to the unraveling of the mystery and a world-wide search for the missing man was instituted.
