The Columbian Society, on Wednesday evening celebrated the victories of Lake Champlain and Plattsburg, at Tammany Hall, which was tastefully decorated with flags; &c; the large room was crowded with an assemblage of ladies and gentlemen, notwithstanding the violence of the storm. His honor the mayor, and several members of the corporation attended. as did General Scott, and most of the military gentlemen at present attending the court martial in this city. The exercises took place as heretofore published; but we cannot omit to notice the oration as delivered by J. P C. Sampson, esq. which was truly national. He recapitulated our victories during the late war in a most animated style--gave the enemy due credit for their success over Yankee frigates on the Serpentine river --contrasted their treatment of prisoners, as shown by the Americans and British during the contest, and with a most liberal hand, did he give the necessary honors to the deputies of the Hartford Convention. It is hardly necessary to add that the oration was received by the whole company with enthusiasm and applause. We trust it will be published.
We should not be doing justice if we concluded this short sketch without noticing the members composing the Columbian Society. This association, we believe, has been instituted about 5 or 6 years. The principles of the institution are republican, and the manner they have conducted its affairs reflect the greatest honor on them-they have, on all proper occasions, manifested their readiness to co-operate with their elder brethren in aiding the cause of their country, and have not a little contributed to the diffusion of correct principles. We hope it will be continued and cherished
