The San Juan Shooting Affray.

The San Juan Press, gives the following account of the shooting affray at that place:

An Englishman named Jack Pollard was shot at the Union Saloon in this place, about ten o'clock on Wednesday night, by a pistol in the hands of Paxton K. Jacoby, under the following circumstances: Pollard is one of a mining company of four or five men, on the Middle Yuba, near Hatfield's old crossing. Their diggings pay very rich. Henry D Van Ness is a partner in these claims. It is customary for these two men to come into town on occasions, and indulge freely in liquor. Van Ness is harmless under its influence, but sometimes irregular in his behavior. Pollard, on the contrary, is over-bearing and insulting. He is known as a bully, and has always enjoyed the unenviable reputation of a woman-whipper. On the night above named, both of these men were in the Union Saloon, as usual, intoxicated. There was considerable of a crowd present, enjoying a free dance with four of the hurdy-gurdy girls. Jacoby was behind the bar. Van Ness was performing certain antics, much to the annoyance of those engaged in the dance, and Jacoby had remonstrated with him on the impropriety of his conduct. Just before the shooting occurred he took a chassez or flourish down the room and through the quadrille, breaking in upon the pleasure of those who formed it. Jacoby went to him, and was leading or pushing him to one side. Pollard observing the movement repaired to the spot, declared that Van Ness should not be interfered with, and encouraged him in his disorderly conduct. He next made a demonstration towards Jacoby, and either pushed or struck him, upon which that gentleman drew a five shooting Colt's revolver from his pantaloons pocket and hit Pollard on the side of the head. Pollard then crowded upon Jacoby and choked him for some time. Jacoby got loose and the report of a pistol was heard, and Pollard fell to the floor. The bullet entered near the collar-bone, under the right side of the chin, and is supposed to have partially divided the jugular vein, from the profuse hemorrhage that ensued. It was supposed at the time that Pollard was killed; but he revived and was carried to a house at the lower end of Main street where he lies in a critical condition. Jacoby was arrested, and after an examination before Justice Farquhar, discharged.
