which has refused to disclose its proceedings to the committee of the House of Representatives, and has cast contempt on the immediate representatives of the People. It But this same insolent and aristocratic corporation, when beginning to fear from popular re-action condescends to be willing to let the committee of the American House of Lords-all the committee to a man, in the opposition to the administration to look kindly and genteelly, and gently into its affairs, for the purpose of giving them a whitewashing; but will not permit the committee of the democratic branch of Congress, some of them friends of the administration, to come even between "the wind and their nobility." So much for the analogy between the majority of the Senate and the British House of Lords. The public is now having a specimen of the insincerity of the wishes of the Senate for any real retrenchment, by the attacks its organs are making on Mr. Barry, the moment he begins to reduce the expenditures of the Post Office Department, which he had indulgently increased for the public benefit—and by their attacks and sneers on the Secretary of War, as seen in the wasteful Bank organ here yesterday, the moment any curtailment is attempted in any kind of expenditure.
