County 4-H And FFA Members Win $635 In Prizes At Timonium Show

Montgomery 4-H boys and girls and FFA members exhibited 41 head of steers, 30 head of fat lambs and 49 head of fat hogs at the Eastern National Livestock Show held at Timonium Fair Grounds last week, winning a total of $635 in prizes. Steers weighed 42,150 pounds; sheep 2,685 pounds; fat hogs, 12,675 pounds, making a total of 56,467 pounds of meat marketed which sold for $19,631.56.

The swine averaged $28.59 per hundredweight; sheep, $29.45 per hundredweight; and steers, $36.74 per hundredweight. All of these figures are for Montgomery County.

Little Jimmie Barnsley, Olney, exhibited the champion club Shorthorn and the Reserve Champion Club Hereford. Herbert and Earle King showed the first prize purebred Hampshire Barrow in middle weight class.

Montgomery County winnings in baby beef classes are as follows:

Herefords, Maryland Open Class: 1st, Jimmie Barnsley; 12th, Wendell Day; 16th, Black Bros.; 24th, Patricia Bailey; 25th, William Anderson. Maryland Club Class: 1st Jimmie Barnsley; 12th, Wendell Day; 15th, Black Bros.; 23rd, Patricia Bailey; 24th, William Anderson. Hereford Middle Weight: Open and Maryland Club placings the same, 5th, Hazel Lechlider; 7th, Jimmie Barnsley; 17th, Donald Hobbs. Lightweight Hereford: Bobby Smith placed 7th and 11th in both the Open and Maryland Club classes.

Angus, Heavyweight Open Club Class: 7th, Jimmie Barnsley; 19th James Nicholson; 24th, Jack Burdette. Maryland Club Class: 7th. Jimmie Barnsley; 18th, Jimmie Nicholson; 23rd, Jack Burdette.

Middleweight Angus, Open Club Class: 9th, Jimmie Nicholson; 20th, Teddy Burton. Maryland Club Class: 8th, Ernest Nicholson; 19th, Teddy Burton. Lightweight Maryland and Open Club Classes: 21st, Jack Rutter.

Shorthorns, Heavyweight Open and Maryland Club Class placings the same: 3rd, Jack Rutter; 5th, Patricia Bailey; 6th, Jane Hubble; 7th, Marie Fisher. Buck Schluderberg Class: 2nd, Jane Hubble. Middleweight Shorthorns, Open and Maryland Club placings the same: 1st, John Linthicum; 6th, Shirley Hobbs; 7th, Jack Burdette; 11th, Hazel Lechlider. Buck Schluderberg award: 1st, John Linthicum; 2nd, Shirley Hobbs. Lightweight Shorthorns, Open and Maryland Club placings the same: 1st, Jimmie Barnsley; 3rd, Tom Dorsett; 8th, Harry Lee Stevens, Jr.; 10th, Teddy Burton.

The Montgomery County Group of Five Steers placed sixth.

The results of the Fat Hogs are as follows: Lightweight Individual (180-225 lbs.) : 7th, Howard Stiles; 9th, Jane Hubble; 16th, Alfred Freysz, Jr.; 17th, Howard Stiles. Lightweight Trio: 5th, Alfred Poole. Middleweight Individual (226-240 lbs.): 1st, Earl King. Heavyweight Individual (241 up): 4th, William Dorsett; 13th, Herbert and Earl King; 17th, George Woodfield; 24th, William Curtis. Total of 56 individual hogs were exhibited in this class. Heavyweight Trio (42 trios exhibited): 3rd, Herbert and Earl King; 7th and 14th, Harold Mullinix, Jr.; 8th and 9th, William Dorsett.

Results of the Fat Lambs are as follows: Individual placings: 3rd, Amy Fry; 4th, Fred Fry; 16th, Marjorie Fry; 19th, Carol Schaefer; 22nd, Douglas King; 31st, Harold King. A total of 66 lambs were exhibited in this class. Trio placings: 3rd, Fred Fry; 12th, Amy Fry; 16th, Douglas King.

The Show was the best that has ever been held here in the State of Maryland, having a larger number of entries that were of the highest quality, being exceptionally good from the top of the class to the last placed animal. There was a total of 166 fat lambs exhibited in the Club classes; 329 fat hogs and 244 baby beeves.
