WIRELESS OUTFIT
THAT WORKS
Ingenious Young Amateur Electricians Plan to Send Messages for Many Miles in Southern New Mexico.
[Special Correspondence to Morning Journal]
Deming, N. M., Feb. 1—About two and a half years ago Louie Kemp got three volt dry batteries from an old electric clock brought to the toy store for repairs. About the same time, Arno Leopold and Fred Wyman had a dilapidated pocket search light and with added appliances and multiplied experience since that time they now have three wireless telegraph stations located at their respective homes on Gold avenue, Pine and Spruce streets.
The editor of the Graphic made personal investigation Saturday and can vouch for the perfection of the system now in daily operation. Each of the boys has his station for sending and receiving wireless messages and it is their purpose to strengthen the batteries and elevate the receiving and sending wires so that messages may pass many miles instead of several blocks.
The boys are possessed of the true inventive spirit and are likewise fortunate in having gray matter concealed in their upper stories. They read anything on wireless or any other kind of telegraphy or electricity and would actually rather hatch out a new idea than to sit down to a square meal. Louie is 18, Arno 16 and Fred 15 years of age and their friends are predicting bright futures for them.
Most of the crude instruments used were manufactured by themselves, and the perfect manner in which they work is truly marvelous.
The sending instruments include a spark coil, condenser, spark gap, helix and key. The receiving set consists of a bi-polar selective switch, electrolytic detector, silicon detector, massive detector and telephone receiver.
A switch is used to throw in both sending and receiving instruments, and both aerial and ground wires are employed.
Keep your eye on those bright boys.
