Full Text

The Cuban rebellion, instead of dying out, as was boastfully proclaimed it would, by the Spanish authorities, appears to be taking on new vigor with each succeeding day. The leaders are evidently men of ability and marked energy, both of which qualifications have been signally displayed. The insurgents have one very marked advantage. Their troops are composed mainly of acclimated men, while the government troops on the other hand, are not natives, and therefore much more likely to become victims of the deadly yellow fever. Although the losses sustained by the government have been sedulously withheld from public knowledge, enough is known to satisfy those acquainted with the effects of the climate upon strangers, and especially upon men exposed to the trials and privations to which soldiers are usually subjected, that a great many have died, and that the disease is very far from showing signs of abatement. Fresh troops have been ordered, and as they will arrive in the very heart of the yellow fever season, many of them will share the fate of their predecessors.

While the Spanish government has the advantage of means and men, it is evident that the insurgents, who appear to be growing stronger every day, will be able to prolong the contest for a long time, if, indeed, they do not eventually win the cause for which they are so pluckily struggling.
