Complaints continue to come in to the chamber of commerce regarding alleged purposeful discrimination against Imperial Valley cars carrying the "1V" license in San Diego. Among others A. W. Hale has informed the El Centro Chamber staff of an experience which befell him early in July in the University avenue district of San Diego.
Hale was accosted by two city police officers in a car and told that one of his headlights was not burning. He was doubtful about this statement and upon stopping the car he found that both headlights were burning and that there were no loose wires. The officers insisted, however, that it would be necessary for him to go to a certain designated service station and have his lights checked. Hale insisted he is an automobile mechanic and quite capable of doing his own work and the examination of the lights made by him in the presence of the officers had revealed that there were no loose wires and that both lights were burning.
The rejoinder of the officers was "if you don't go to this station and have your lights examined we will give you a ticket," and when Hale continued his refusal they proceeded to do so. Hale protested to the judge in San Diego and has received no further summons.
"This is another manifestation," stated Manager Hays of the El Centro Chamber today, "that there is a purposeful campaign against Imperial Valley cars in San Diego.
There is only one thing apparently to do and that is to get new numbers for our cars. or we can refrain from making trips in the direction of San Diego city and county until such time as Imperial Valley cars are no longer discriminated against."
