SALE OF FEDERAL JOBS
Senate Moving For Investigation of Traffic in Post Offices

Washington, Dec. 18.-(AP)-A new move for a senate investigation of long smouldering charges of the sale of federal patronage by Republicans was made today by Senator King (Democrat) of Utah, who offered a resolution for an inquiry by a select committee.

His resolution, along with a somewhat similar one offered yesterday by Senator Harris (Democrat) of Georgia, will be considered by the judiciary committee at a special session Monday to determine if an investigation is warranted.

Both resolutions provide for a national inquiry with particular attention to the South, where it has been charged by Democrats in and out of congress that Republican officials have sold postoffice and other federal patronage.

The King proposal declared that it has been charged that members of the national committee of the Republican party, chairmen of state committees and other persons having partisan political authority and influence, particularly from states which do not have Republican senators or representatives in congress, have been guilty of bartering recommendations, indorsements and influence for the appointment of individuals to federal offices for money and other things of value and advantage.

A committee of five senators would be named under the King resolution, while a committee of three is provided by the Harris proposal.

Agitation for an inquiry was initiated in the senate by Senator Harris, who charged that Ben Davis, negro Republican national committeeman from Georgia, had sold postoffice patronage. When he offered a resolution for an investigation of the situation in Georgia, it was broadened to include the entire country on the suggestion of Chairman Norris of the judiciary committee.
