“ No one can doubt that an unholy effort is making, whose end is a division of the people of the South and North; and these inconsiderate, if not wicked slanders, are but too well calculated to fan into flame the living coals that have been placed between us and our northern brethren. Heaven defend us against every art whose aim is to made us look with disgust or indifference upon our blessed Union. the course of the denagogue. The first, will be found, at such a crisis as this, putting forth his voice, and his heart, in softening the asperities of sectional prejudices, and promoting brotherly affection, endurance and forbearance. Who shall calculate the value of this Union? Give to the Lapidary a diamond of magnitude, and demand of him rules by which it deteriorates in price as it proceeds in division. This might show, faintly. the comparative value of the fragments of liberty which would be left us; after dismemberment.”
