The regular meeting of the Burton Farmers' club was held at the residence of D. S. Cramer on the 7th. The attendance was not quite as large as usual, owing to the fact that the farmers were very busy getting in their spring crops. But the lack of male members of the club was pretty well made up by the ladies, who were out in full force, and did (as they always do) their full share in making the occasion a pleasant one. By the way, I feel like saying to the gentlemen members of the club that you must take hold a little better if you do not want the laurels all to pass from your brows to those of the sisters.
As your reporter did not take any notes of this meeting it will only be possible to give an outline of the day's business. A good deal of time was taken up in discussing the question of accepting an invitation to visit the State Agricultural College. After a good deal of talk it was decided to go on the 4th of June, that being the day for the next regular meeting. Nearly all the members signified their intention to go and a committee was appointed consisting of Daniel Lewis, G. T. Mason and C. P. Shepard to see about the railroad rates, notify the officers of the college and extend an invitation to the Maple River club. All who would like to do so are cordially invited to "ring in" and go along.
The principal subject of discussion was "local option," which brought out a general expression from the members of the club The most of them seemed to think that something should be done in the matter and there was a general expression of wonder that the prohibitionists of the county did not take some steps to start the ball rolling. Can it be possible that they are so selfish as to be indifferent to a measure that may have a great deal of good in it even if not just what they want? With the terrible evil of intemperance staring us in the face, with a large city like that of Owosso growing up in our county, from which all the evil tendencies of the rum power go forth to drag our young men down to perdition, it would seem that any measure looking to the abatement of the evil in the least would be hailed by all right thinking people with delight.
After some discussion the following resolutions were adopted and ordered sent to the Owosso Times for publication:
Resolved: That we, the members of the Burton Farmers' Club, favor the agitation of the local option law and the enforcement of the same.
Resolved: That we request all neighboring Farmers' Clubs and all farmers organizations to take an expression on this subject in their meetings and report the same to the Owosso Times for publication.
Adjourned to meet in eight weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Guilford.
F. M. SHEPARD.
