Hearing on Murder Charge Began: Parents' Preliminary Set

Hearing of Jennie Scardino, 16-year-old Italian girl charged with murder for the alleged shooting of Mike Termain, February 20, 1920, began in the district court this afternoon at 2 o'clock.

The hearing this afternoon marks the first appearance of the girl in the higher court since being held to trial at a recent hearing held in the city court.

John and Josephine Scardino, parents of the girl are also charged with murder in connection with the shooting and preliminary hearing will be held for them February 3.

Mr. Scardino is now held in the county jail without bond, while Mrs. Scardino has been given liberty, upon her own recognizance in order that she might attend to an infant child. Until the preliminary hearing, Mrs. Scardino is compelled to report at the sheriff's office at frequent intervals.

No further information as to the connection of Mr. and Mrs. Scardino with the crime has been forthcoming from County Attorney David Wilson. However, he has admitted that the fact that Mr. Scardino is alleged to have been the beneficiary in a life insurance policy taken out for Termain for $2000, is a factor in the arrest and holding of the man. Mr. Wilson also has said that conversations between the parents of Jennie Scardino and the girl in which they are alleged to have threatened her life if she did not kill Termain, and alleged to have been overheard by Jennie Termain, will also probably be used against the couple.
