Full Text

The Mississippi is a most unsatisfactory stream. No sooner have the floods subsided and all danger from that source passed than the banks begin to cave and the land slides grow into destructive avalanches of trees and dirt and debris, closing up the mouths of entering streams, choking the canals, interfering with navigation and otherwise making the heart of the planter and steam boat-man very tired. New Orleans is almost in as much trouble with her unmanageable stream as Galveston is with her unremovable bar.
