How fleeting is popularity in the system
of democracy! the fashion, as it were,
of a day. Burke, who was so much the
idol of the party as to have an equal number
of votes for president--nay, who
might have filled that dignity, is now despised
-cast off like a recreant by those
who but late bawled out his praise.
No circumstance can lead to the annihilation
of faction half so fast as to have
the demons of discord begin to worry each
other. In this way the private citizen
gets a fair view of the principles of the
men in whom they might otherwise have
long continued a misplaced confidence.
It is to be hoped that the electors of our
adjoining state will discover, from the recent
disputes of those high in office, that
which may restore Maryland to its wonted
rank in federalism; by returning such representatives
as will have the welfare of
their country alone, in view.
