It seems probable that American Red Cross nurses have lost their lives while en route to Great Britain on an errand of mercy.
They have been the victims of German submarines which sent the ships upon which they travelled to the bottom of the Atlantic.
What is strange about the tragic affair is that there has been but little public condemnation of Nazi brutality in connection with the death of these American women.
As a nation of people, seeking peace we have gone a long way in our effort to avoid incidents that might lead to warfare.
The Civil War in the United States and the World War were the only wars lasting four years since Napoleon's time, unless one counts the undeclared conflict between China and Japan. The Civil War was our own affair, but the World War was none of our business and we paid heavily in blood and money; and we appear to want a hand in the Sino-Japanese conflict, too.
