Nogales Girl Arizona's First Woman Marine

PHOENIX, April 15-A Nogales girl, Miss Betty Jean Bowman, has the distinction of being Arizona's first woman Marine.
She is the 25-year-old daughter of Wirt G. Bowman, widely-known Nogales capitalist and former Democratic national committeeman for Arizona eight years.
Miss Bowman was sworn in here Monday as a member of the enlisted personnel of the U. S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and will soon be called to active duty and assigned to Hunter College, New York City, for six weeks of basic training, then transferred to a regular Marine school for special technical instruction.
Women Marines are being enlisted for duty at stations within the continental United States, where they will take over work now done by men.
Miss Bowman is a graduate of Castilleja School for Girls, Palo Alto, Calif., and attended the University of Arizona.
