Full Text

On Sunday last, the Lord's Supper was celebrated in the Presbyterian Church of this place prior to the departure of the pastor on his contemplated European trip, and in the evening, a very friendly and generous sentiment was manifested by the closing of the Congregational church and the assembling of Pastor and people with their brethren over the way, in a union service, and in an expression of respect and common sympathy in the prospective separation. Mr. Anderson took part in the services, and the sermon was delivered by Rev. W. H. McGiffert, of Pontiac, Mich. The effort was a very creditable one in style and ability. At its close, Mr. Anderson, of the Congregational church, made a short but most happy allusion to the occasion of the separation, the harmonious and kindly feeling that had characterised the intercourse and labors of the pastors of the two churches, and the pleasure that this thought would afford in the temporary absence, the hope of its renewal and continuance, when, in the providence of God, they should be brought together again. A cheerful assurance was also expressed, that the wandering shepherd would not be forgotten in the prayers of the people of both churches, and that in his, also, there would be reciprocal remembrance and interest, and though going up from opposite ends of the earth, they would be heard by the same common Lord. It is needless to say that these exercises were of a very pleasing character.
