The Secret Out!

It is thought by many that there is a concerted combination, by authority, in the Methodist Church to expel the active abolitionists. In corroboration of this sentiment, I submit the following.

Before the expulsion of E. W. Goodwin and Jacob M. Brown of Auburn, for the heresy of abolition, IT IS A FACT, that the preacher, H. F. Row, was busy for weeks, in going from place to place, speaking to the prejudice of these brethren, and stating that they must be turned out, calling them slanderers of bishops, ministers, &c.

IT IS A FACT, that one very respectable and aged brother said that Row came to him and endeavored to prejudice his mind against these brethren and the abolition brethren in the church. and that among other things he said these abolitionists must be turned out, for I know of one rich man who will come into the church if we can get them out; who will pay more to support preaching than all of them put together," or words to this effect.

The old gentleman replied, "Do you think that a right principle to go upon?"

"Yes," said R.. "I do." He had consulted, he said with the presiding elder and several other ministers, and they had come to the conclusion it was right to do so.

But the end is not yet, nor is this the most singular part of the Mystery. One of the committee who sat on the case of E. W. Goodwin, (and the writer does not know whether he sat on J. M. Brown's case or not,) said to a merchant in his store at Auburn, people ought not to blame Brother Row so much for what he had done. That a council had been held with the Presiding Elder and others, and they had come to the determination to turn the abolitionists out of the Auburn church- that Brother Row had showed him a LETTER FROM THE BISHOP, saying the abolitionists must be turned out; that they had been borne with long enough!!
