Patrolman Is Hit In Investigating Battle In Bar

City patrolman Edward Ramirez was knocked down at 4:15 a.m. today when he entered Mani's Bar after being sent to investigate a fight reported in progress there.

According to the police report, Ramirez was struck by Shelley Ashe, 831 Thomas St., who was fighting with Robert Ross of the shrimp boat Silver Dew. Ramirez said he was struck by Ashe's elbow as he sought to separate the two men.

The patrolman reported that he got up and subdued Ashe by hitting him over the head with his night stick, inflicting a head wound which required three stitches. Ashe was treated at Monroe General Hospital.

Both Ashe and Ross are being held by police pending trial. Ashe is charged with fighting and resisting arrest and Ross faces a charge of fighting.

Ramirez was assisted by Patrolman Nathan Tynes in making the arrests.
