CHARLESTON Jan. 10

Piracy We are sorry to state that the regular trading American sloop Richard Alfred, Terbell of Sag-Harbour was fallen in with on her passage from New-York to this port on the 14th inst. near the Hole in the Wall by a privateer schooner of three guns and 80 men who took possession of the sloop under French colours sent a prize master and 6 men on board and intended taking her into Havanna, from whence the privateer had come.

They had her in possession two days, during which time they were employed in robbing the vessel of every valuable article, which they carried on board of the privateer; they took three thousand dollars in cash the captain's own property and the hard earned money of several years of unremitted industry. Not satisfied with this they took all his wearing apparel save what he had on. With every letter and paper they could find on board.

On the 16th inst his majesty's schooner Becouvette, lieut. Wcale fell in with both vessels recaptured the sloop and gave chase to the privateer who kept up running fight under Spanish colours and escaped by her superior sailing.

Event Details

The American sloop Richard Alfred, Terbell of Sag-Harbour, was captured on passage from New-York to Charleston by a privateer schooner of three guns and 80 men under French colours near the Hole in the Wall. Privateer intended to take her to Havanna, robbed the vessel for two days. On the 16th inst., HMS Becouvette under Lieut. Wcale recaptured the sloop and chased the privateer, which fought under Spanish colours and escaped.
