SPICKETTS BACK FROM 7 WEEKS' TRIP TO STATES
Economic Conditions Does Not Prevent Spending for Pleasure

"Economic conditions in the States present many contradictory phases," said John T. Spickett, who with Mrs. Spickett returned this week from a visit of seven weeks to Pacific Coast States.

"In Los Angeles, for instance, where residents say business is very dull 110,000 persons paid from $1 to $5 each for admission to the Stadium on the last night of the La Fiesta celebration and 25,000 other persons who had bought admission tickets remained outside unable to gain entrance.

Theatres Well Attended

"Motion picture theatres draw good patronage. Conditions, I think are better in San Francisco and Seattle than in Los Angeles, which, of course, feels more keenly than the northern cities, the decline in tourist travel."

Mr. and Mrs. Spickett were Alaska's representatives at the La Fiesta, which was the one hundredth and fiftieth renewal of the event.

After the Fiesta, they had planned to go to Omaha to enable Mrs. Spickett to attend the national convention of postmasters, but immediately after the Los Angeles celebration, Mr. Spickett was taken ill.

Surgical Operation

He underwent a surgical operation in a Hollywood hospital. After he left the institution he did not feel like traveling for a few weeks. On the recovery of his strength, he and Mrs. Spickett leisurely journeyed north. Soon after reaching Seattle, they embarked for Juneau.

"Everywhere we visited persons with money questioned us about Alaska and its opportunities," declared Mr. Spickett.

"I expect that many will come north next spring seeking investments."
