ROCKVILLE LIBRARY HIGHLIGHTS

At the annual meeting of the Rockville Library Association which was held January 18 at the library, the librarian, Miss Miriam Pasma, gave the report of the progress of the library for 1938, which proved to be a successful year. Every phase of activity showed an upward trend and more and more people of the community have turned to the library for reading as a profitable use for their leisure time.

Certain statistics are essential to show what the library is accomplishing, and how its growth and development compare month by month.

The librarian presented in total numbers the circulation and financial statements for the year 1938. 868 adults and children had registered as borrowers of books. 8,404 fiction and non-fiction books for adults were circulated. 10,876 children's books were read 19,280 - total number of books borrowed for the year. This figure is very gratifying, as Judge Donald DeLashmutt assured the members after the report was given.

210 members belong to the Association, of which 48 are outside of Rockville members, including Gaithersburg, Derwood, Cabin John, Washington Grove, Sandy Spring, Olney, Poolesville, and Potomac.

930 new books were added to the regular stock for the year. Approximately 35 new books are added each month to the rental collection.

Many valuable gifts of books were given during the year by Mr. Robert Peter, Mrs. Albert Bouic, Mrs. Theodore Mason, the Inquiry Club, Mrs. Alexander Kilgoer, Mrs. Hugh MaGruder, Mrs. Arthur Rudd, Miss Emily Blandford, Mrs. Philip Laird.

$117.90 was collected from fines. $184.94 was collected from the rental collection of books. $244.50 collected from memberships. $547.34 total collected from fines, rents and memberships.

Officers for the ensuing year were elected: Mrs. Donald DeLashmutt, president; Mrs. John Henderson, first vice-president; Mrs. Frank Marshall, second vice-president; Mrs. Kate Talbott, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Rose Dawson, recording secretary; Mrs. Allison Chapin, treasurer; Miss Miriam Pasma, librarian was appointed. The directors are Mr. Donald DeLashmutt, Mrs. Almus Speare.
