From the darkened front of the Crystal theater the most tantalizing, hypnotizing, synchronizing of Oriental tunes with orchestral brass and jazz accompaniment, issued into the quiet street last night.
The man on the street on his way to the prize fight stopped and listened. He crept nearer and tried the door of the theater. Both locked. Curses! He tried to crawl through the ticket window. Too small. He ventured to scale the door to the transom. Too slippery.
"S-s-t. This way, pard," beckoned one who appeared from the shadows, and the two disappeared around the corner of the building. Straight to the high gate of the stage entrance alley, over the high pickets, past the sentinel in red bloomers and fez, they of the unerring scent sped. In a second they were back in the wings, crowded with pirates and creatures of the ballet while in the center stage a beautiful Oriental maiden writhed and whirled in the mazes of a mystic dance of the temple.
Suddenly the orchestra blared up and the choruses dashed forth into dance and song and the uninvited spectators sank in their corner satiated with delight.
What of the Terrible Turk and Kid Martinez. They were seeing the costume rehearsal of "Cabarabian Nights," the U. N. M. Dramatic club production.
Tonight only.
