Carnival Closes in Blaze of Glory; Aeronaut Slightly Injured By Fall From Parachute During Final Flight
The Beavers' carnival ended last night in a blaze of glory and with the best crowd of the week. Beginning with yesterday afternoon when the first big crowd of the day gathered to see the balloon ascension and the parachute drop the crowd never ceased but increased with the passing hours until after the awarding of the diamond ring to the most popular young lady of the city, which occurred at about 10:30.
The happiness of the afternoon was somewhat marred by the falling of the aeronaut, A. S. Bartlett, from his parachute for a distance of some twenty-five feet, landing in a pile of rocks. Bartlett was somewhat bruised by his fall, but was quickly patched up by Drs. Frank and Moran who were immediately called.
The ascent made by the professor was a good one, and the descent was also thrilling, but just as he was about to reach the ground he seemed to lose control of the parachute and to fall rapidly to the ground in a heap. As soon as assistance could reach him it was found that while he had been somewhat hurt he was not seriously injured.
All the attractions seemed to take on a glitter that they had not heretofore had during the week, and in consequence they were better patronized than ever, and everybody seemed pleased with them. The youngsters were there with the feather dusters and confetti, and screech horns making the night hideous.
At 8:30 o'clock the contest for the most popular young lady in the city closed, and the committee having the matter in charge repaired to the Beavers' club to make the final count. So many more votes than were expected were cast that the count took more time than was expected and it was not until 10:30 that the committee arrived at the grounds to announce the vote and to present the lucky contestant with the much prized jewel.
Miss Edith Hildebrandt, who for the past two weeks has held a consistent lead over all the other contestants, suddenly, by the casting of a large number of votes secured on the east end of the Santa Fe between this city and Las Vegas, jumped far to the front with nearly ten thousand. Before the count was finished the lead she had was increased until it was found that she had a clear majority over all other candidates of 13,436 votes, or nearly two to one. The nearest competitor was Miss Juliet Fleischer who received 3,170 votes.
The standing of the contestants was as follows:
Miss Edith Hildebrandt 14,860
Miss Juliet Fleischer 3,170
Miss Jane Warner 2,536
Miss Sadie Morelli 1,700
Miss Viola Blueher 1,616
Miss Florence Salazar 1,510
Miss Cleo Kelly 1,505
Miss Grace Broadwell 1,500
The ring, which was the prize for the lucky contestant, is a handsome diamond affair and would have been presented to the winner at the carnival grounds had she been present. Before the voting was over, however, she had gone home and the ring was therefore sent to her by the Beavers.
The credit for winning the contest goes to the east end Santa Fe men who rallied to the support of Miss Hildebrandt immediately after she entered the race, and continued to work for her interest until the closing of the polls.
All in all, the carnival was a most successful affair, and reflects credit upon the enterprise of the Beavers, who engineered the deal from start to finish and furnished a week of fun to the city it would not otherwise have had.
